Harriet Ann Rowe Ray was born in Illinois to Eli W. Rowe and his wife. She married Drury Ray.When she was a little girl she was trying to climb out her window and into a tree when she fell and broke her ankles. The medical treatment consisted of burying her feet over her ankles in sand in the backyard. She had to stay out there -day and night - until the ankles mended. She sat in a chair, they made an arbor and kept her supplied with quilts and company. The ankles never did mend correctly and she had weak ankles for the rest of her life. The red hair in the Curtis Hudson family comes from her line; several of her brothers were said to have red hair while others were deep black in color.
